PMAC MythBusters: Common Cosmetic Injectable Myths Debunked

Myth #1: Cosmetic Injections are toxic and harmful

We think this one most commonly comes from the name of the substance used in anti-wrinkle injections - the botulinum toxin. It is a neurotoxin, which sounds scary, but has been approved and considered safe for quite some time now. It is used throughout medicine as an amazing treatment option for many medical conditions, including migraines, overactive bladders and spasms. All medicines can be harmful when not used correctly or by trained medical professionals. The FDA recommends that the dose of Botox should not exceed a total of 360 units in 3 months. For some perspective, the average face wrinkle session only uses about 8-40 units. There is the potential for some side effects, but these are minor and rare. In the hands of a skilled and qualified medical practitioner, such as the injectors at Port Medical Aesthetics, cosmetic injectables are safe and effective.

Myth #2: Cosmetic Injections will freeze your face, leaving you looking like a Real Housewife of OC

Technically they can, if a practitioner is unskilled, inexperienced and completely overdoes it. It may be the look that a very small percentage of people are going for, but at Port Medical Aesthetics, we don’t believe in the frozen face look. By carefully injecting anti-wrinkle injections into the right muscles, the depth and appearance of fine lines are reduced, but the face can still move and express emotion. Fillers should be applied skillfully and subtly to not over-enhance, avoiding the ‘blown out’ look. For those who want to add a bit of volume, we do so gradually over a long period, so the result is smooth and natural. A skilled medical practitioner will be able to make the most subtle changes, to achieve a look that you feel happy and comfortable with.

Myth #3: Once you start, you have to keep getting more…and more and more

Cosmetic Injectables such as anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are not permanent, so you will need to maintain them (usually every 3-4 months for toxin and 12-18 months for fillers). However, one myth we hear is that once you get them, you have to keep increasing the amount and frequency of the injections…which is definitely false! Anti-wrinkle injections can also be used in a preventative way. The less your facial muscles contract, the number of new wrinkles formed will be reduced. So you may actually need fewer units for the next round of injections. And if for whatever reason you stop your injections, your skin may return to its baseline, but you won’t end up with more wrinkles.

Myth #4: They’re just for women

Absolutely not! We have many amazing male patients. Men are not immune to the ageing process, and more and more men are taking pride in their appearance. Anti-wrinkle injections are minimally invasive, with no downtime, and a skilled practitioner can produce very natural results without looking like a Ken doll. Cosmetic injectables can be used to subtly enhance the structure of the face that some men may have always felt self-conscious about, such as the chin and jawline. The result is a smoother, more youthful and happy appearance and above all, a boost in confidence.
